I offer supervisory relationships based on respect, empathy and congruence, within which supervisees can explore and reflect upon their client work. Good supervision can enable practitioners to stretch, grow and develop.
The requirement for keeping client work confidential means that supervision is the only place where counsellors can freely talk about their work.
Most people who train as counsellors are drawn to helping others, and during times of stress it can be easy to forget about self-care. It is important to keep an eye on this; to notice early signs of stress and burn out, as it affects our capacity to be present and connect with our clients; to build the therapeutic relationships that make our work possible.
The BACP and other professional bodies require practitioners to monitor this, and supervision provides the space and time to pause, and notice how present we are able to be in our work.
This needn't be a burden and good supervision can be a restorative experience in itself. It is particularly helpful when challenging dynamics can leave counsellors stuck in difficult places. Supervision can help to identify any personal material that has become activated, and to settle back into a more congruent way of being. I offer supervisees the opportunity to work this out whilst holding the boundary respectfully, in a way that stops supervision from becoming counselling.
As an accredited member of the BACP I work within their Ethical Framework to explore ethical dilemmas. These can range from small but sometimes surprisingly tricky issues, to more complex ones.
I have experience of working with counsellors, mental health workers and tutors. I would welcome enquiries from anyone working relationally.

"Supervision is recommended to anyone working in roles that require regularly giving or receiving emotionally challenging communications, or engaging in relationally complex and challenging roles"
